The capital of Indiana, Indianapolis, is the state's most populous city. With a population of around 855,000 people, it is the 15th largest city in the United States. The metropolitan area has more than 2 million residents, making Indianapolis (or Indy) the economic and cultural center of Indiana. Indigenous peoples inhabited the area from 10,000 BC.

The completion of the Michigan and national highways and the arrival of the railroad later consolidated the city's position as a manufacturing and transportation center. Two of the city's nicknames reflect its historic links to transportation: Crossroads of America and Railroad City. Since the consolidation of the 1970 city-county, known as Unigov, local government administration has operated under the direction of an elected 25-member city-county council headed by the mayor. The Central Indiana Regional Transportation Authority (CIRTA) is a quasi-governmental agency that organizes regional carpool and van rides and operates three connections to the public workforce from Indianapolis to employment centers in Plainfield and Whitestown.
Health care in Indianapolis is provided by more than 20 hospitals, most of which belong to the private, non-profit health systems of Ascension St. Vincent Health, Community Health Network and Indiana University Health. Several are teaching hospitals affiliated with the Indiana University School of Medicine or the Marian University School of Osteopathic Medicine. Other major non-profit private hospitals based in the city include Ascension St.
Vincent Hospital Indianapolis, Community Hospital East, Community Hospital North and Franciscan Health Indianapolis. Our few small claims to fame include being the origin of some celebrities, some sports teams and an annual car race that I admit I have never attended despite 24 years of residency, on and off. Indianapolis is a city filled with quiet Midwestern simplicity. With more than 800,000 inhabitants, it's far from being a small town.
In fact, it's the thirteenth largest city in the United States, but there's something about it that's never felt like a city. If you're an avid skier, mountain biker, climber, or hiker, unfortunately you won't find much in Indianapolis to meet your needs. If you're an Indianapolis resident and not a sports lover, know that your city still benefits from these sports through tourism and economic growth. Even though Indianapolis is in the center of the Midwest, don't think that there aren't many healthy options to choose from. Indianapolis is just a fraction of Chicagoans population of nearly three million, but its breadth extends much further.
The most prominent weeklies include NUVO, an alternative weekly, the Indianapolis Recorder, a weekly newspaper that serves the local African-American community, the Indianapolis Business Journal, which reports on local real estate news, and the Southside Times. After all, Chicago, being so imposing and vibrant and rough, loud and cold, hardly ever seemed to embody what I considered that meek and obedient Midwestern attitude. Since moving from Corydon in 1825, Indianapolis has been the capital and seat of government of the state of Indiana. After the Civil War and in the wake of the Second Industrial Revolution, Indianapolis experienced tremendous growth and prosperity.
